Shettihalli Rosary Church is one of the most unique and photogenic landmarks in Karnataka. Built in the Gothic architectural style by French missionaries in the 1860s, the church now stands partially submerged in the backwaters of the Hemavathy Reservoir (Gorur Dam). The church was abandoned after the dam was built in 1960, and it now emerges and submerges with the changing seasons.
A Ghostly Beauty
During the monsoon season (June–September), the water level rises and the church is completely submerged, with only the spire and a portion of the roof visible above the surface. As the water recedes from October onwards, the church gradually emerges, revealing its full glory by summer.
The sight of the Gothic arches, towering spires, and stained glass windows reflected in the still waters creates an ethereal, almost surreal landscape. The church has become a favorite subject for photographers, Instagrammers, and filmmakers. The play of light and shadow through the empty arched windows against the water backdrop makes for stunning compositions.
It is important to note that the church is not accessible when fully submerged. The best time to visit is between November and May when the water level is low enough to walk around the structure. Even during this time, visitors cannot enter the church itself for safety reasons.
