Manjarabad Fort is a unique star-shaped fortress built on a hilltop in Nuggehalli, 20 km from Hassan town. Constructed in 1792 by Tipu Sultan, the Mysore ruler, the fort is a fine example of 18th-century military architecture and strategic design. The star shape allowed defenders to cover all approaches with minimum blind spots.
A statement in Stone
The fort is constructed entirely from stone and mortar, and its star-shaped design features seven pointed bastions projecting outward from each corner. The fort spans an area of approximately 38 acres and includes underground tunnels and chambers that were used for storage and as escape routes.
The fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding Nilgiris landscape, including rich paddy fields, coconut plantations, and the Hemavathy reservoir in the distance. The sunset view from the fort is particularly bathed in golden hues.
Unlike many other historical monuments, Manjarabad Fort remains relatively uncrowded and offers a peaceful, trouble-free experience. There are no entry fees or strict timings, and you can explore the fort at your own pace.
